Right girls, ”Can You Feel It” (Jackson 5/ 1980) , summer’s just about here, and you don’t want it to be a ”Cruel Summer” (Bananarama /1984) right? You want to don that little red bikini right? Well it’s time to “Jump” ( Van Halen /1984) into action!
Sunglasses, Sunglass Hut, Bikini, Sea Folly, flip flops, Woolworths.
Winter left you feeling a little sluggish? Well it’s time to ”Beat It” (Michael Jackson /1982).
From Monday 10 October, Virgin Active introduces a new aerobics class inspired by the one and only, Jane Fonda, RETRO AEROBICS. The class is bound to have you “Walking On Sunshine” ( Katrina and The Waves /1983). Now you don’t have to be ”Working for the Weekend” ( Loverboy /1981) in order to shake your bootie. Work out to a selection of the 80′s hottest tunes that will have you ”Push It” ( Salt-N-Pepa /1986).
Ceri Hannan, National Group Exercise manager at Virgin Active South Africa, says the class is a great all rounder with pre-choreographed routines to burn calories. “It’s an excellent workout for your cardio vascular system and will ensure you’re breathing a little heavier. In addition to being a cardio workout, the class also features functional body conditioning and will target areas like the glutes and stomach.”
Retro Aerobics is a one hour class and is broken down into 12 individual tracks all with specified routines. The warm-up sequence sets the scene for both the body – as it’s full of basic rhythmical moves that prepare you for the work to follow – as well as putting the class into the right 80s frame of mind with ‘Le Freak’ by Chic, a great retro tune.
The class will accommodate approximately 50 people depending on the size of the studio and is equipment free, which means it is ideal for those members who are intimidated by the weights section of a club.
Some of the 80’s tunes you can expect to hear which will result in your legwarmers shuffling up and down your lycra clad legs include:
- Sisters are doing it for themselves;
- I think we’re alone now;
- Fame;
- Walking on Sunshine;
- White Wedding;
- You spin me right round;
- Club Tropicana.
