The Eames Lounge Chair is an iconic furniture piece epitomising modern design. The chair was designed in 1956 by the famous design duo of Charles and Ray Eames. When Niels Wildenberg turned 21, he didn’t treat himself to a used car but rather opted to buy himself an original and somewhat covetable Eames Lounge Chair.
Now at 43, Niels, a founder of the furniture brand Mal is producing these iconic lounge chairs, appropriately called “1956” in brightly coloured plastic. Mal comes from the Dutch word for “mold,” but also means “silly”… appropriate considering the fun colours they are made in.
A further iconic piece within the Mal product lineup is the “Lummel” lamp. Standing at 2,25 meters tall this light is inspired by the designer’s 14-year-old son who often, donned with a hooded-sweater, spends his day, as most boys his age, just hanging about.
Mal’s designs are a reflection of current design. Whilst they evoke a sense of playfulness they are simultaneously grounded in serious design and manufacturing principals. Mal products are available in South Africa Through Edge Interiors.
