Samara Private Game Reserve Part 1: Karoo Lodge

Our arrival at Samara Private Game Reserve was a special one. After a 3 hour drive from P.E. Airport, we were greeted with snow capped mountains, warm hot chocolate, friendly smiles and roaring fires. (See their new flights and helicopter service too)

Below, our room at Karoo Lodge. Above – I loved how the lodge was lit up every evening when you came back from your game drive. One is treated to two game drives a day – but more on that in Part 2.

Also upon returning from your late afternoon game drive, (+- 3 hours, so one would arrive back btwn 6-7) a hot bubble bath would await. Such an awesome treat each evening before dinner.

Honeymooners enjoyed the more intimate bar area and cosy fireplace (so jealous as they laughed over a glass of wine, no-one hanging on their leg, hehe!) while larger families relaxed by another roaring fire in the living area.

While enjoying the various downtime areas with a drink after your game drive, home made chips and biltong were enjoyed before a delicious 4 course dinner each evening. One thing about this trip, was that you never went hungry. Breakfasts had the day started with a continental buffet breakfast including a hot breakfast or your choice of the daily breakfast special. The feast continued with a hot lunch and afternoon tea. A few of my favourites where a creamy cauliflower soup, a dessert cheesecake, beautifully cooked fillet – and I loved starting the day with eggs and salmon.

There was plenty of space for Harry to run wild and explore – and with no major predators in the reserve, one could relax. I’m guessing in summer one would be a little more careful for snakes 🙂

While it’s a 5 star lodge, the atmosphere is very relaxed – I felt like I was in a scene from “Out Of Africa”, so charming,  and the incredibly helpful and friendly staff felt like family by the time we left.

Blissfully relaxed. The Kids Programme (See more about it here) allowed parents to enjoy some down time, reading at the pool or taking an afternoon nap.

Waking up to frost on the grass and feeling very matchy, matchy in my Mungo Gown. I bet on a summer’s evening these outdoor loungers are the perfect spot to star gaze! The stars are just incredible out there and the wide open space and silence a treat! Watch out for Part 2 – coming soon! xx
